Film and video activities

FILM AND VIDEO by KAREL BAUER

I will address, over the course of three hours, the process of designing, video taping, and editing a television documentary program. I will focus in particular on the aspect of photography and videography – what are the basic skills and techniques, and how they are applied in the wide variety of situations encountered over the course of a television production.

I encourage an interactive approach to learning, and welcome questions and active participation. I will bring professional lights and tools, and demonstrate their use. The participants may bring their own video cameras and learn about how to use them more effectively.

Through describing some of my experiences in over 15 years of television production, I will discuss the aesthetic and technical decisions made during productions, and what motivates those decisions. By the end of the session, participants will have gained a deeper understanding of television documentary production – and perhaps will have learned a few useful techniques as well.

Creative ‘TV’ by James Haines

Introduction The session’s objectives are to use visual, aural and kinaesthetic modes to facilitate language acquisition with the media of television/video used as a vehicle for this. Business skills such as interviewing, speaking to an audience, and developing rapport with colleagues are explored through the media of this creative TV workshop.

If you were given the freedom to put together a TV show, what would you come up with? This workshop encourages participants to work together as a team, thinking creatively and critically, while having fun in the process.

Participants spend the first part of the session participating in exercises to break down communication barriers. The workshop then looks at how the participants would go about producing their own TV show, from the initial idea to managing the budget. We concentrate on the format of the show and explore the differing style of presentation techniques used by television presenters.

Participants practice how to talk to the audience, interview guests and introduce their own TV show,

The final part of the session is spent on group work, creating a TV Programme in English. They are helped by me and the assistant teacher. The culmination of the session is the filming and viewing of the show.
